22 years ago: The City Hall midnight massacre (or the day Mary Ann Doran stabbed Jim Dyer in the back)

The players in the four ring circus other wise known as the city hall midnight massacre. Top Left: Mayor Jim Dyer, top right: Common Council President Constance McManus, bottom left: Democratic Town Committee member (and current secretary for Mayor Mark Boughton) Joan Soderstorm and bottom right: Democratic Town Committee Chairwoman (and current Republican Registrar of Voters/behind the scenes ringleader of the Danbury Republican Party) Mary Ann Doran

This week marks the 22st year anniversary of what many have come to call either the city hall midnight massacre. If you want to have a better understanding of Danbury's current political landscape (or the close relationship between Democrats and Republicans in the city), this incredibly nutty episode would be a good starting point...as many of the Democrats involved in this nonsense are currently Republicans.

From the News-Times Jun 2 1987. click here to download the article as it appeared in the newspaper (PDF):

I still shake my head whenever I think about what Mary Ann Doran does for a living today, Dyer is a big time contributor to Boughton's campaign, or the fact that Joan Soderstorm works in Boughton's office. But again, when one looks at the political history of Danbury, nothing shocks me anymore...
