Pumpkins & Power Tools

What would Halloween be without power tools? A little more trick than treat, I say.

HandyMan and I got our pumpkins carved just in the nick of time before the neighbourhood kiddos came knocking on our door. Okay, so we really didn't carve them exactly. Take a little bit of Martha Stewart, add some Rambling Renovators, and pumpkins end up looking like this:

Add some glow-in-the-dark-mice:

And you get this!

Our front stoop isn't the only thing that was decorated.

(Yes, that is a farmer, his wife, and a very sleepy little chicken).

Phone calls

Grr...

My phone has been going off the hook with political calls!

Last week I received TWO calls form the Republican Town Committee where someone read a script about Boughton's "accomplishments."

Last night, I received a call from the Gary Goncalves and William Totten campaign.

Today, I received a polling call regarding the town clerk race (btw: Louise, did you pay your taxes yet?) AND a poll call regarding the mayoral race.

...oh, did I mention that ALL of these calls were to my CELLPHONE!!!!

Grr...

Dirty politics

This letter to the editor pretty much sums up Mayor Mark Boughton's dirty campaign tactics that has gone on behind the scenes.
I vote for the candidate, not the party. This time, Mark Boughton does not get my vote. Too much has gone wrong, been neglected, and corruption predominates, especially when representatives from City Hall call a landlord three times asking him to remove a Goncalves sign from his building's window.

Even some of the City Hall employees aren't necessarily fans of his.
Worried about feeding their families and keeping a roof over their heads, they keep the silence

Dirty tactics like City Hall telling store owners on Main Street to remove their Goncalves campaign material has been going on for some time. One only has to go see the Boughton political sign on the corner of Main and South Street (a sign that's in the same area where a Goncalves, Perkins, and Visconti once once stood) to understand what's going on.

Boughton has gotten away with this nonsense because it goes unreported.

It goes unreported because people fear the kingpin of City Hall.

People haven't forgotten the fact that one organization that spoke up against the tactics of City Hall 9287G/ICE ACCESS) got their funding taken away from them (Hispanic Center) while the other one was threaten by the President of the Common Council as well verbally threatened by the mayor's chief of staff at the time.

City Hall employees are my best sources yet they also fear speaking out because of fear of Boughton with his agents roaming the halls (i.e., Doran, Natale, Soderstorm).

This letter symbolizes the dirty politics and divisiveness that still exists in the city, a divisiveness that is being ignored by the media and dismissed by those in power at City Hall.

BETHEL 2009: Candidate for Board of Ed files lawsuit

On October 21st, Pro-Bethel Board of Education candidate Dan Gaita filed a defamation lawsuit against the town's superintendent of schools and the Democratic and Republican first selectmen candidates.

According to papers filed at Danbury Superior Court, Gaita, whose also First Selectman Bob Burke campaign treasurer, alleges that an email sent by school superintendent Gary Chesley to Board of Education members that was critical of a video he placed on YouTube caused a "loss to his reputation, shame, mortification, and injury to his feelings."

I interviewed Gaita back in September when he addressed the matter in greater detail and painting a larger picture where he alleges that he's being demonized for expressing his opinion on subject matter concerning Bethel.

For Chelsey's part, in an interview he did with the News-Times, he called Gaita's lawsuit "silly."
"Mr. Gaita has been threatening to file a lawsuit for several months. Now, days before the election, he filed it. It must be a way to get some notoriety before the election,'' Chesley said Wednesday.

Calling the suit a "political ploy," here's what Democratic First Selectaman candidate Matt Knickerbocker, one of the individuals Gaita filed against, had to say about the matter.
This suit is entirely without merit," Knickerbocker said Wednesday. "I can't believe a candidate for the Board of Education would pull a political stunt like this that will cost the taxpayers money."

Craybas was unavailable for comment for the News-Times piece and I've not attempted to reach him at this time for a comment.

You can read the complaint in full below:

BETHEL 2009: Interview with RTC chairman Paul Improta regarding News-Times fundraising article

Back on October 22, I did a post on a News-Times article by Eileen FitzGerald that pertained to the latest fundraising reports from the three candidates running for First Selectman in Bethel.

Here's the details:
Democratic first selectman candidate Matt Knickerbocker came out ahead of his two opponents in fundraising for the Nov. 3 campaign, based on the most recent tallies.

Knickerbocker has raised $14,690 for his campaign, with the majority raised in the last month. That is more than both his opponents combined.

Incumbent First Selectman Robert Burke raised $4,550 this period, which added to his existing funds gives him an aggregate of $8,350 raised for his third campaign.

Republican challenger Larry Craybas reported $2,075 contributions this month, with an aggregate of $4,250 raised for his campaign.

After I posted on the article, I was contacted by Bethel Republican Town Committee Paul Improta who wanted questioned the accuracy of the article and wanted clarify the perception given in the piece that the Craybas camp is low on funds.

Instead of writing up my account of my interview with Improta, I gave the chairman of the RTC full reign on this blog to explain the situation.

Via a phone conference, here's the interview I did with Improta (WARNING: The sound quality of the audio is a bit choppy at the beginning).

BETHEL 2009: Candidates take to the airwaves

Things are getting very interesting in Bethel these days...

With the municipal elections being days away, the three candidates for the Selectman ticket took to their airwaves to make their case.

From this week, here's interviews with the First Selectman/Selectman candidates running on the Democratic, Republican, and Pro-Bethel ticket.

Complaints over Roy campaign tactics mounts

Since my initial post on the questionable practices of Derek Roy's campaign, I've received quite a deal of emails from residents of the 5th ward who wanted to give the university dormitory student/Common Council candidate a piece of their mind.

Most complaints I've received pertains to the Roy campaign's lit drop tactics. Basically, a lit drop is when a candidate comes by your house and drops off information about their candidacy. Usually, if you're not home, the candidate (or people associated with his campaign) will "drop" off the material at your home.

To my best knowledge, there are restrictions regarding where a candidate can drop off their material. For instance, (again, this is my understanding) a candidate is not allowed to place any material inside a resident's mailbox. With that in mind, I received an email form a 5th ward resident who was not too pleased to find about finding this on his/her mailbox (unless it is the result of the normal delivery of postage-paid mail).

Roy_01

To add insult to injury, another person sent me this photo...

Roy_02

Notwithstanding the legality of placing campaign material on an individual's car, my question to the Roy campaign is "how do you know that the person's car you littered with your campaign material is a resident of the 5th ward? Just because a car is parked in the 5th ward doesn't automatically mean that the individual who owns the car lives in the 5th ward.

I've been asked by these neighbors whether or not this type of lit drop procedure is legal. I have a inquiry into the state election enforcement commission and I'll update this post when I get an answer.

In short, it's not nice to piss off the very people need to vote for you. In this case, I think Roy just lose at least 2 votes.

UPDATE: From the feedback I'm receiving, in terms of mailboxes, a candidate can not place non-postage material into a resident's mailbox but they can place material on a resident's mailbox. Now, this isn't official, but this is info is coming from multiple sources who are in the know when it comes to campaign stuff.

No word on placing material on automobiles yet.

UPDATE 2: According to the state election enforcement offices, there is no statue that pertains to the placement of campaign material. In other words, this area of campaigning is not within their jurisdiction.

So to recap: Placing NON-POSTAGE campaign material in a mailbox is against federal law and a BIG no no. Placing material on a mailbox should be okay. Campaign material on cars is annoying but could be legal.

In any event, in my opinion, the best way for candidates to drop of their material is to simply place it securely in/on the door (or better yet, design your material so that you can place it on the doorknob. That way, you really don't piss anyone off too much (i.e., image having to deal with removing a soggy piece of campaign crap from your car or lawn in the rain).

Adventures In Baby Led Weaning

So let me get this straight, Mommy and Daddy... you're going to try Baby Led Weaning with me? That means you introduce me to solid foods and I get to feed myself, no spoon-feeding and no purees? And I get to sit at the table with you and have my own share of the food? I'm game!

What's this green thing? Asparagus, you say? Okay, I'll try it. It looks fun enough.

YUCK!!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ME? That tastes horrible!!

What else you got? Something red? I like red! Okay, let's try the red pepper.

Man, THAT TASTES JUST AS BAD AS THE ASPARAGUS!!! I'm not even trying the yellow pepper!

More, more, more! I want to eat something else! Banana? Ooh, now that's fun to hold.

Okay, its not so bad. I can get some of it in my mouth.
What are those asparagus and pepper thingys doing there? Didn't I tell you yesterday I'm not interested?!

Yay, more banana! Sometimes it tastes good.

Sometimes it tastes bad.

Maybe I'll just stick to eating my bowl.

HatCityBLOG EXCLUSIVE: Zoning Commission 10.27.09 meeting

Here's video footage of the now infamous Zoning Commission meeting which involved a proposed amendment to the LCI-40 (industrial land) zone. This amendment would pave the way to allow the Danbury Elks Lodge to open shop on the property that currently houses the Indian Trading Post on Sugar Hollow Road.

As I'm pressed for time, I'll add my commentary regarding some of the outrageous comments from the commission members soon.

Funny photo of the day (or will the mistakes from this campaign ever end)

Now, as anyone who's attended Western know that the university is primarily a commuter college where a majority of the students who attend classes, live outside the fifth ward. It's also common knowledge that the voter turnout students in elections are extremely low because most students have little or no knowledge in municipal politics.

Now take all of this into consideration when you view the political sign in this image that was taken at Western yesterday.

Republican 5th Ward candidate Derek Roy has had what most would consider an "interesting/bizarre" campaign to say the least...and if I was him, I'd be VERY happy that the elections are a few days away as the increasing damage he could do to his campaign at this point can be kept at a minimum.

From...
  • an embarrassing episode with the military when he used his national guard uniform in a political video (which is a VERY, VERY, VERY against military regulations), which he had to remove from YouTube,

  • posing in his fire fighter uniform in his revised political ad, which offended just about every firefighter I've talked to (Roy's a volunteer fire fighter with Engine 3),
  • being a candidate who was raised in Goshen Connecticut whose only connection to Danbury stems from the fact that he's a student at Western,

  • a person whose time on the EIC commission (an appointed post that was done by Boughton) is so small that it's barely noticeable.

  • a person who's only relation to the fifth ward is via the fact that he's lives at the BRT/Crosby Street dormitory (a.k.a Brookview Commons),

  • and a person who has a series of laughable quotes on his website such as this gen that doesn't place the mayor in a good light such as:
    Stabilizing Taxes

First off, any increase in taxes will only increase the burden on families and that approach in these tough economic times is simply unacceptable. Furthermore, I hope to continue to support the success of the Boughton administration by keeping some of the lowest property taxes in our state, maintaining the lowest credit and bond rating in our history and keeping a low debt service rate and strong fund balance.
(note to Derek, saying that the mayor has maintained the lowest credit rating is probably NOT a good thing...just sayin')

...at some point, one has to stop shaking their head and just feel bad for this kid.

Look, I know Derek, in fact I interviewed him a few months ago before he was officially nominated at the 5th ward candidate. He's a young and bright kid who's probably in the race because of his love for politics (which is commendable).

That being said, the fact that the Republicans are running a kid who lives in what is in essence a dormitory at Western is even running for 5th ward Common Council position should give you some indication about the seriousness the local GOP have in terms of picking up a seat in this ward.

Remember, the seats are presently held by Fred (he just received another award while you've read this post) Visconti and Duane (former candidate for State Senate who comes from one of the largest families in Danbury) Perkins, which should give you an indication that Roy and his running mate Linda J. Ossenfort (a 9/12 tea party extremist and former Republican 5th ward candidate who was crushed by Perkins and Visconti in 2005) have virtually no chance in winning.

Hopefully, I'm sure when he looks back on everything, Roy will take his lumps as a learning experience and he will apply what he learned towards the future. For now, for his sake, I'm just hoping he doesn't make any more embarrassing mistakes like posting political stuff on the campus of Western before next Tuesday.

Playing it straight

Today, the Gary Goncalves campaign released a new video where the Democratic nominee for mayor talks directly to the residents of Danbury about his concerns and vision for the city.

Zoning Commission madness

260

Dysfunctional (and/or arrogance) is the best way to describe last night's Zoning Commission meeting...and since the News-Times' Dirk was not at the meeting, the recklessness among the members of the commission is absent in his write-up.

In short, there were members of the public (including myself - although I didn't speak at the meeting) who were concerned over a proposed amendment to the LCI-40 (industrial land) zone. This amendment would pave the way to allow the Danbury Elks Lodge to open shop on the property that currently houses the Indian Trading Post on Sugar Hollow Road.

Instead of getting into details over what happened, I'm going to withhold my criticism over what happened last night until after I have the video of the meeting uploaded for viewing. I'll have a full write-up on everything that happened last night soon.

Certain members of the commission should be ashamed of themselves (or better yet, not re-elected).

Taking the fight to ICE

Although the Danbury 11 case is ongoing, the students at Yale University are filing another lawsuit against Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. The suit stems from the raids in New Haven back in 2007 which the lawyers for Yale claim were a retaliation for Elm City's ID card program.

The New Haven Independent is covering the story and you can read all about the suit filed today by clicking here.

Text of the lawsuit is below.

BETHEL 2009: Bethel RTC chairman questions News-Times fundraising article

I was contacted by the chairman of the Bethel Republican Party in regards to a post I did on the fundraising activities of First Selectman candidate Larry Craybas, Robert Burke, and Matt Knickerbocker.

Hopefully, I'll have a post ready on everything tomorrow but apparently, there needs to be a bit of clarification on the News-Times piece regarding the latest fundraising report for the candidates.

...I'll clear things up later.

LOCAL ACCESS VIDEO: Common Sense 10.23.09 broadcast

NOTE: Bethel First Selectman Robert Burke opted to not attend the News-Times editorial board candidate forum. You can read his statement below:
Bethel First Selectmen, Bob Burke, declines an invitation to the News Times Candidate Forum.

Citing the News Times’ documented campaign of personal and political bias against his administration and candidacy, Mr. Burke has declined an invitation to participate in the News Times’ First Selectmen candidate forum. “I will not participate in a candidate forum being conducted by any organization, including the News Times, that has exhibited a clear and documented history of biased reporting and editorial character assassination against me. Their campaign to defame my integrity and discredit my public record disqualifies them from conducting an unbiased candidate forum and does not deserve my attendance ”, said Mr. Burke. “The people of Bethel know what I’ve done over the last 4 years in office and evidenced by my landslide victories in the last two elections, they do not hold the News Times endorsements in a credible light”, added Mr. Burke.

To reinforce his reason for not attending, Mr. Burke lists a number of recent examples:

  • Despite repeated documented requests to delete slanderous blog postings, the News Times failed to monitor their sponsored blogs which enabled the posting of hundreds of slanderous and disgusting comments that has caused irreparable and permanent damage to Mr. Burke’s public & personal integrity. Their negligence in allowing systematic personal attacks against his character on their websites is unconscionable and litigious.

  • The News Times has repeatedly delayed the publication of Burke support letters and openly favored the placement of opponent’s letters in higher circulation Sunday editions.

  • The News Times has repeatedly misrepresented Mr. Burke’s comments in their articles.

  • The News Times has never endorsed Bob Burke for First Selectmen and in fact, it is clearly evident that the candidate forum is just a formality in order to justify their planned endorsement of my democrat opponent, Mr. Matt Knickerbocker.

  • The News Times has ignored Mr. Burke’s and his staff’s repeated requests to use specific submitted photos to accompany campaign articles and instead has resorted to publishing their own photos in a subliminal campaign to portray him poorly.

“As far as I’m concerned, The News Times is a shameful, despicable shell of its former self that isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on, and it’s editorial staff should be ashamed of itself”, Mr. Burke reiterated.

You can read the response from News-Times editor Art Cummings by clicking here.

NOTE 2: From what I can tell, the audio during certain portions of the show were edited. This was not my doing...what's presented is how the show was broadcast on Friday evening.

NOTE 3: You can watch First Selectman Burke on a special edition of Common Sense this Wednesday at 8PM on Comcast channel 23.

Priorities

In the wake of tonight's VERY IMPORTANT Common Council At-Large debate (at 7PM TONIGHT), lets take a look at the Elephant Party and get a glimpse at their priorities...

DanburyGOP

Wonder if any of the Republican At-Large candidates will take a cue from their leader and blow off the FREE and OPEN debate and opt to raise cash for their fellow candidates.

...unreal.

Showhome Inspiration

Showhomes are great sources of inspiration. Often a collaboration of many different designers, showhomes are great for showing the latest design trends and can give you ideas about new materials and furnishings, paint colours, and how to layout and decorate rooms. Some of my favourite showhomes are the Hampton Designer Showcase, the annual HGTV Dream Home giveaway, and the Kips Bay Showhouse.

So when House & Home magazine (my fave design mag) recently designed a showhome, you knew the results wouldn't disappoint. They've designed the
Princess Margaret Hospital Sweepstakes Showhome in a "modern farmhouse" style. You can check out the videos on the House & Home site (they're revealing a new video tour of a different room every week) and see how lovely this home is. It has a real quiet elegance about it... I love the white oak floors, the serene palette of bone white, natural wood, and gunmetal gray. Its not over the top and I think really fits in with the trends toward more natural Belgian design that Restoration Hardware and others are putting out. There's some great design tips in the videos too - like using a carpet runner at the foot of your bed for a pop of colour (I would never have thought of that!). The best part is that funds from the sale of tickets for the Sweepstakes go towards cancer care and research. As that's a cause dear to me, thought I'd let you know about this opportunity to win something beautiful and do some good at the same time.

COMMON COUNCIL AT LARGE DEBATE TONIGHT!

TONIGHT at Ives Concert Hall at Western Connecticut State University, the local League of Women Voters will be holding a Common Council At Large candidate forum.

The forum is at 7 p.m. TONIGHT so if you're not doing anything, please attend.

I will be on hand to videotape the event which will be posted here tomorrow morning...if there is Wi-Fi, I'll see if I can do a video stream (I'm not holding my breath).

Boughton avoiding FREE and OPEN debates: Day 47 (the government access channel edition)

Well, so much for Mayor Boughton showing the chamber of commerce debate on the government access channel.

Remember back when Danbury's last honest man had this to say to the Fairfield Weekly about his lack of participating in debates?
“However, in the interest of public discourse I proposed, as an alternative, a TV debate, which can be seen [on the Comcast government access channel] anytime they want to show it.”

Boughton also repeated this remark during the 45 dollar a plate Chamber of Commerce debate...

Well, after a week, City Hall started broadcasting the ONLY debate between Boughton and Gary Goncalves BUT most likely, you probably missed it since only the first 10 minutes of the debate is being broadcast.

Think I'm kidding, here's footage of the so-called debate on the government access channel...fast forward to about the 2 minute mark and you'll see what I mean.

So to recap:

  • Boughton has used the same ol' timed excuse he used in 2007 when it comes to offering the public FREE and OPEN debates,

  • Offers the Fairfield Weekly a series of bizarre explanations regarding the time in which he received an invite from the League of Women Voters that doesn't pass the smell test,

  • Thinks doing fundraisers for fellow candidates is more important than FREE and OPEN debates

  • Goes off the deep end when members of the public expose his schedule,

  • and now we see that our mayor doesn't even have the common decency to make sure the ENTIRE chamber of commerce debate is PROPERLY broadcast on the government access channel for members of the public who couldn't fork over 45 dollars to see the candidates running for PUBLIC OFFICE debate at an AFTERNOON luncheon.

...oh yeah, the government access channel is controlled at City Hall and this nonsense has been going on since they first televised the debate LAST THURSDAY.

People over Politics...or just pathetic.

Full disclosure

Now, if you seen me on local access, you've seen me talk about the need for full disclosure when it comes to people endorsing candidates.

Take that into consideration when you read this letter to the editor from Robert Melillo in which he endorses Republican 1st ward Common Council member Shay Nagersheth.
This year on Nov. 3 in addition to selecting who is going to serve the great city of Danbury as mayor I also have the opportunity to decide who is going to represent me on the Common Council. As a resident of the First Ward I will have an easy decision as to who should be elected when I go to Danbury High School and cast my ballot.

The choice is between an individual who is already working hard as my current councilman or someone who has never held an elected office in Danbury. My choice is the obvious one, Shay Nagersheth.

Shay has been working diligently over the last few years both as a ward representative as well as a city-wide representative on the Common Council. He has dedicated himself to the needs of his constituents. He fought hard to improve a drainage issue on King Street, has advocated for child safety zones, worked to keep Danbury services available, all while striving to control taxes and keep Danbury an affordable place to live. He has not only proved himself on the council but also has worked diligently trying to balance out the needs of the city while protecting environmental concerns as chairman as the Environmental Impact Committee.

[...]

It is for this reason that I ask you to join with me in voting for Shay Nagarsheth as well as his running mate, Phil Colla as First Ward Councilmen.

Robert Melillo

DANBURY

Now, notwithstanding the fact that in the last two years, I can't think of one time in which Nagarsheth has led a ad-hoc committee and/or asked ONE question during a Common Council meeting (and I have videos of almost all of the Common Council meeting since April 2006), the real problem I have with this letter has nothing to do with the endorsement, but the lack of disclosure from the News-Times when it comes to the person who gave the endorsement.

You'll see what I mean when you look at the image below...

Danbury_GOPsnapshot

POINT 1: Robert Melillo is an active member of the Danbury Republican Town Committee (as well as a member of the Zoning Commission, but that's really not relevant to this post).

POINT 2: As a member of the DRTC, Melillo would had voted in favor of Nagersheth during the committee's convention earlier this year.

Based on those two factors, the News-Times has a responsibility to alert their readers whenever a member of the Democratic or Republican Town Committee writes a letter in which they endorse a candidate.

...just sayin'

UPDATE: A reader email me and ask how Melillo was able to publish a letter to the editor endorsing a candidate when he's a candidate for the Zoning Commission. I'll try to find out if elected officials running for office can endorse another candidate on the same political ticket in a letter to the editor.

At the very least, I would expect that the News-Times would write a disclaimer or not allow these types of letters to be published. I'll find out the newspaper's policy in terms of letters like this and keep you posted.

UPDATE 2: Just remembered...

As well as:
  • being a member of the Zoning Commission,

  • a VERY active member of the Republican Town Committee,

  • a top cheerleader for Mayor Boughton's policies, most notably, his comment during a common council meeting in 2007 in support of the parade ordinance (although he never attended ONE ad-hoc committee or public hearing on the subject),

  • Melillo is also the treasurer of current City Clerk's campaign.

UPDATE 3: If a volunteer of Gary Goncalves campaign's letter to the editor had a disclosure statement attached to it, then clearly the News-Times has an obligation to disclose that fact the author of this letter is a member of the Republican Town Committee who voted in favor of this Common Council member's nomination as well as the treasurer of the current City Clerk's campaign.

UPDATE 4: Okay, here's the contact information for the Letters department at the News-Times:
Letters to the Editor (203) 731-3344 letters@newstimes.com

Please call or email the newspaper and inform them about this disclosure problem and request them to make a correction (be nice).

UPDATE 5: You guys are killing me!

Okay, follow me here.

According the documents which are easily available on the City of Danbury's website, Robert Melillo lives on 1 Lois Street.

(Google map):

Lois Street is located in the 1st Ward by Golden Hill Road and Danbury High School.

This letter clearly states that the writer lives in the first ward and is signed Robert Melillo.

This year on Nov. 3 in addition to selecting who is going to serve the great city of Danbury as mayor I also have the opportunity to decide who is going to represent me on the Common Council. As a resident of the First Ward I will have an easy decision as to who should be elected when I go to Danbury High School and cast my ballot...

McGowan sexual assault case update coming soon

I don't know if I was at court or at a three ring circus today...

So much happened today in the court case against former mayoral candidate / anti-immigrant activist John McGowan that it's going to take me the night to re-read all my notes and do my write-up.

Between McGowan's strange questions, Tom "Big(o)T" Bennett numerous disruptions in the court room, bizarre statements regarding jurisdiction, and dealing with a hearing which lasted hours instead of minutes, to say that today's court proceedings were interesting would be an understatement.

Since this is day four of Elise Marciano BFF's trial (and I didn't talk about what happened on day three). I'll work on what happened on both days and post my write-up tomorrow.

...trust me folks, you don't want to miss what I have to say about what happened today!

BETHEL 2009: Knickerbocker, Burke beat Craybas in fundraising

As the latest round of campaign finance reports come in, the Democratic candidate for First Selectman of Bethel has raked in more cash then his two opponents combined. What might be worrisome for the Republicans is the fact that the person they didn't nominee for their ticket out raised the person they chose to lead their ticket.

The News-Times has the details.

Well get a better understanding on where the candidates stand once their last report is filed (10 days before the election).

Boughton avoiding FREE and OPEN debates Day 41: The "did you enjoy your free dinners Mark" edition

When it comes to Mark Boughton excuses in regards to avoiding FREE and OPEN debates with Gary Goncalves, the last honest man in Danbury used the this laughable recycled excuse:
"It's already late in the (election) cycle and we do have a full schedule of events," he said. "I also have a responsibility to run the city of Danbury."

Now we know why about Boughton's full schedule on October 20 and 22nd...he couldn't get away from his dinner appointments

Think I'm kidding, just read this letter to the editor.
In the Oct. 20 article "Residents hold protest in front of City Hall," reporter Dirk Perrefort states "Boughton is the only incumbent in the state to reject a League debate in the last 15 years, a claim league officials couldn't verify."

Verification came in the form of my conversation last week with Jean Rabinow of the Connecticut League of Women Voters.

Sept. 10 was the date that Mayor Boughton was invited by the League to debate. He said he never received it, so a second invitation was sent on Sept. 24.

In the article, the mayor excuses himself from debating by referring to the lateness of the follow-up invitation.

Past excuses from the mayor include: his first responsibility is to run the City of Danbury. I respect that comment, only on the proposed evenings of the debate, Oct. 20 and 22, he was scheduled to enjoying dinners at Barden Corporation and Ability Beyond Disability. Not to diminish their importance, I still think his first allegiance should be to the larger voter population.

This action shows great disrespect to the League, the voters of Danbury, and his Democratic challenger Gary Goncalves. The League is about education in a nonpartisan, accessible and open forum with a live audience and it's free. Not during a $45 per plate luncheon, not on cable -- and not in a Republican-oriented venue.

So Boughton couldn't provide the public a FREE and OPEN debate because he couldn't break his dinner appointments?!?

Yeah, that sounds like a real busy schedule...

People over Politics or Politics over THE PEOPLE!

UPDATE: Hark! Danbury's last honest man found time in his busy schedule to respond...
Boy, they really are getting desperate...

Today in a letter to the editor to the NewsTimes, one of my opponents volunteers alleges that I was attending two dinners (one for Barden, and one for Ability Beyond Disability) on the nights for potential League of Women Voter debates.

Aside from dragging two terrific institutions into politics, one a major employer (Barden) in Danbury, and the other an outstanding service organization that does tremendous work with the disabled (Ability Beyond Disability), the author of the letter is just...wrong.

So let me set the record straight.

Tuesday evening I attended an employee recognition night for Barden Corporation (congratulations everybody) two awards (one posthumously) were given by me for 50 years of service to Barden. I did not stay for the dinner. This event was booked long before any campaign events except the Chamber of Commerce debate which was scheduled at the beginning of the fall.

Thursday evening I am scheduled to attend an auction at WCSU to feed people less fortunate than us and then I am playing in a wheel chair basketball game for Ability Beyond Disability at Danbury High School. Stop by and check it out, it is a major fundraiser for the organization.. No dinner in sight.

Just pathetic..

You're kidding me right?

Notwithstanding the fact that:
  • Boughton found time to attend at least FIVE debates when he ran for mayor back in 2001,

  • the mayor's excuse to the Fairfield Weekly regarding not debating Goncalves doesn't pass the smell test, AND

  • the 45 dollar a plate chamber of commerce debate has not been televised on the government access channel (something Boughton promised he would do),

let's go back and re-read the mayor's excuse in not agreeing to a FREE and OPEN debate.
"It's already late in the (election) cycle and we do have a full schedule of events," he said. "I also have a responsibility to run the city of Danbury."

So, your responsibilities to the city of Danbury consist of attending an awards ceremony (hmm...wonder how long that took you to do) and a wheelchair basketball charity event. These two things prevented him from doing at least one FREE and OPEN debate for the residents you supposedly care about?

Mayor Boughton had events to do on Tues and Thurs? Okay, fine. How about Monday, Wednesday, Friday, the weekend? I'm sure many members of the public would like to see your schedule for every evening from now until election day (including weekends) so we can ALL see how busy you really are when it comes to running the city. I mean since your so busy from now until election day to do ONE FREE and OPEN debate, I think the public has a right to know exactly what you're doing (besides littering the area with MORE lawn signs).

In short, the mayor of the 7th largest city in Connecticut felt that attending two fundraisers is more important than offering ONE FREE and OPEN debate...and he has the audacity to describe the person who informed the public about his schedule as "pathetic."

Pot meet kettle.

Scoop du Jour: Sarah Richardson Casting Call

Hmm, I just noticed that most of my scoops seem to be about Sarah Richardson. Yes, I am one of her biggest fans, but if this keeps going on, it might border on 'stalker-ish' behaviour, don't you think?

No matter. Just got word of a scoop that I have to share with you: Sarah is casting for a new show! This one is focused on homeowners or renters who want a room in their house redecorated. That's right - no big renovations (a la Design Inc. or Sarah's House) - just simple, chic, makeovers from Sarah & her sidekick Tommy. Are you game (and live in the Greater Toronto Area)? Then click on over here and sign up!

On another related note, I just won tickets to hear Sarah speak at an event in early November. Yay! She's taking questions from the audience so I'll have to think something up to ask her. Any suggestions??

LOCAL ACCESS VIDEO: Common Sense 10.16.09 broadcast

GUEST: Bethel First Selectman Bob Burke

We have a debate...

...for the position of Common Council (at large) that is.

Here's the press release:
The Danbury Area LWV will sponsor a debate for Common Council candidates running for the seven at-large positions on Danbury ’s Common Council. The debate will take place on Tuesday, October 27th at 7:00 pm at the Ives Concert Hall on the midtown campus of Western Connecticut State University. The debate is open to the public and all fourteen candidates have been invited to participate.

“There are six incumbents seeking re-election to the Council at large”, stated LWV President Carol R. Elder, “and eight other candidates, some first-time office seekers, contending for the privilege of representing Danbury ’s 75,000 residents.”

Danbury ’s 21 member Common Council is made up of two Council members elected from each of the city’s seven wards plus seven Council members elected at large to represent all city residents, regardless of the ward they live in.

“This combination of having some local representatives to address neighborhood issues, and some at large representatives, to address more universal issues, gives our legislative body the chance to really reflect the diversity in our community,” stated Elder.

“Many Danbury residents don’t realize that the at large Council Members on the Common Council represent them as well, “she concluded.

This debate will give voters an opportunity to hear these candidates respond to six predetermined questions and make a closing statement. The debate will also be taped by John Neumuller for Danbury Live and broadcast on Comcast Channel 23.

This is the first time in my memory that I can remember the candidates for Common Council (at-Large) agreeing to a debate...in fact, this is a GREAT idea that ALL candidates for the Common Council should take note of in the future.

How To Sell A House

In today's housing market, it takes a bit of effort to get your house noticed and stand out from the crowd. Gone are the days when an address in a hot neighbourhood, 6 grainy pics on an MLS listing, and an open house were enough to draw the buyers and the multiple bids. Buyers have their choice of product today. So what can you do to catch their eye?

I think Kit over at DIYdiva has an answer. I'm a fan of Kit's... she is a no-holds-barred, tool-wielding, barefoot badass DIYer. Just try telling her she can't do something (like learning how to drive a tractor and install fence posts) and she will prove you wrong and leave you in her sawdust. Over the past two years, I've enjoyed reading about her renovation of her 80-year old house in Toledo, Ohio on her blog. She has done a ton of work - renovated the kitchen, built a pergola, remodeled the bathroom etc. And now that house is up for sale and she has created a website to sell it. But this isn't any old real estate website. She's included a bit about the history of the house, great info about the surrounding neighbourhood, photos and descriptions of the renovation work done, and even a breakdown of how the asking price was calculated.

Its quite a unique approach to selling a house. As a DIYer myself, I would appreciate knowing about the work done on my house by previous owners... was the quality any good? Did they know what they were doing? Or are there 'surprises' hiding behind my walls, things that weren't done right and will cost me a small fortune to fix in future? Kudos to Kit, the care and effort she put into her home shines through on the real estate site and on her blog.

But then there's another thought... by writing about our houses and the tearing down and building up we put them through, do we expose too much to future owners? I mean, isn't home-buying an emotional thing? If I don't know what's behind the walls, then all I see are the pretty paint colours, your staged furniture, the way the place glints in the sunlight. If you tell me your dirty reno stories, you appeal more to my practical head than to my starry-eyed, illogical, heart. Will that entice me to bid over asking? I'm not so sure. What do you think?

I do hope DIYdiva gets wayyyyyyy over asking for her home; its quite a steal, if you ask me. I'll have to keep this approach to selling a house in mind for whenever we decide to sell Casa HandyLuster. Not that that is happening anytime soon - there's still much to tear down and build up around here.

Boughton avoiding FREE and OPEN debates: Day 39 (the protest edition)

This afternoon, a group of residents held a protest outside City Hall to express their outrage over Mayor Boughton's arrogant refusal to hold FREE and OPEN debates with Democratic mayoral nominee Gary Goncalves.

Led by organizer Ellen DuBois, protesters armed with signs such as "No debate in a police state", "No Democracy without debate" and "What are you hiding from Danbury voters?" walked along Deer Hill Ave and West Street and made their presence known during the hour-long protest.

Before things got underway, I had a chance to interview DuBois about the protest.
