Hydrogen emmisions. Fingerprint of star formation in M51

M 51 is a mere 37 million light years away.

The red portions show intense star formation. The pic was taken through a narrow hydrogen alpha filter that in effect highlights emissions from atomic hydrogen as it 'burns'.
