Astronomy Pic o' the Day: 1.6 Million Galaxies. Holy Bejeezus the Universe is big!

Click to see the large version. This scaled down version simply doesn't do the awe inspiring original justice.

Each spot is NOT a star, but a single galaxy. These are only the nearest 1.6 x 10 to the 6th power, mind you. There are MORE. (The blue stripe is light from stars in our own Milky Way, toned down so as not to interfere with the light from the dimmer more distant 'island universes'.

Of particular note: The filamentary structures, as if the galaxies ride on the residuals of bursting bubbles of cosmic expansion...cosmic man.. Here's some more info on the picture.
